EU-SDGN II: IPC, CEMESO Engage Media Leaders In Electoral Coverage

Ahead of the 2027 General Election in Nigeria, the International Press Centre, IPC, and the Centre for Media and Society, CEMESO, both Lagos based, had a one-day Strategic Engagement with Key Media Operational Leaders, comprising of Heads of Media Organisations, Heads of News and Programmes in broadcast stations, in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, 1 July 2025.

In his opening remarks to welcome the participants, the Executive Director of IPC, Mr Lanre Arogundade, emphasised the need to engage with journalists and media professionals, especially with the purpose is to strengthen Nigeria's democracy.

His words: "Today’s gathering is particularly important it brings together media executives and senior journalists whose leadership can shape the quality and impact of election reporting in Nigeria".

Arogundade added that the event was geared towards the performance of the media in the past and present election coverage and to find a way forward to ensure ethical, inclusive, and impactful media practices ahead of future elections.

He said the media has FOUR critical roles during elections: Civic & voter education, Public enlightenment, Campaign platform provider, Conflict prevention & management, which aren’t optional but are very fundamental as the credibility of our democracy depends on how well the media perform them.
The IPC ED also informed that under the EU-SDGN II programme, the media are recognized as pillar of democratic consolidation, while IPC and CEMESO are implementing Component 4, which focuses on strengthening the media’s role.


To facilitate the two plenary sessions divided into broadcast and print/online media, the groups appointed a former Commissioner for Information, Mr Paulinus Nsirim and also a veteran broadcast journalist, Mr Klem Ofuokwu for the sessions.


In the brainstorming sessions, the journalists came up with various recommendations, including media workers, especially journalists' welfare, improved media infrastructure, agenda setting, strenghtened regulation by the NBC among others.

Nigeria Cannot Afford a One Party System

  It is not a secret that the ruling APC is bent on destroying the opposition and coast home in the 2027 General Election. It has dismantled the the opposition PDP and the upcoming ADC that Nigerians fear that the 2027 elections might just be a coronation exercise despite their displeasure with the ruling party. FIFA U20 World Cup: Argentina Await Flying Eagles Battle in Round of 16

  The Flying Eagles of Nigeria will take on Argentina in the round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. The Nigerian lads finished third in Group  to earn a place as one of the best losers after a pulsating 1-1 draw against Colombia early Monday morning. Captain, Daniel Bameyi scored from the penalty spot for his consecutive penalty goal to rescue a point against Colombia, who had scored earlier.
