 Soccer loving Nigerians had their expectations dashed last night in Morocco as the Super Eagles failed to advance to the intercontinental playoff of the 2026 World Cup. The lackluster Super Eagles after huffing and puffing for 120 minutes- with stroke of fortune from officiating- lost 4-3 to DR Congo in the ensuing penalty shoot out. Nigeria had raced into the lead in the 3rd minute when Frank Onyeka's effort was deflected into the net by a Congolese defender. Afterwards, the Eagles attack went dead. Talismanic Victor Osimhen ran himself ragged chasing lost causes as he never received needed services. He fired blank and was replaced at half time with a suspected injury.   Rivers United have been drawn in Group A of CAF Champions League for the 2025/26 season. In the draws held on Monday afternoon in Johannesburg, South Africa, the only remaining Nigeria's representative, Rivers United were drawn in Group A alongside defending champions Pyramid FC of Egypt, RS Berkane FC of Morocco and Power Dynamo FC of Zambia. Al Ahly of Egypt, Young Africans of Tanzania, ASFAR of Morocco and JSK of Algeria are in Group B while Group C has Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Al Hilal SC of Sudan and FC Steloilupopo. Group D has Esperance of Tunisia, Simba FC of Tanzania, Atletico Petroleos of Angola and Stade Malien of Mali. Head coach Finidi George, expressed optimism of the side advancing to the next round of the competition. Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Chris Green, was at the draws.   Rivers Utd are the first Nigerian club  to play in the CAF Champions League group phase after overcoming Black Bulls of Mozambique 3-2 on aggregate. The Nigerians suffered a 1-0 defeat penultimate Saturday but won 3-1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday to become the first Nigerian side to reach the group stage since 2016.   The over 150 billion Naira PH Airport City Project has been launched in Port Harcourt. The Super Eagles of Nigeria are in action for the final group phase of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the hope of automatic qualification. The Super Eagles are now back in contention after almost bungling their chance since the beginning of the qualifiers.  Nigeria drew its first three matches and lost the fourth in what could be described as the worst start int he history of world cup qualifiers.   The Super Eagles of Nigeria last night narrowly edged the Crocodiles of Lesotho 2-1 to boost their chances of qualification for the 2026 World Cup, but it might be an effort coming too late. The Super Eagles were characteristically  lacklustre for the first half of the game as they failed to break down the well honed defensive approach of the home side, using the Moses Madhiba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa. All is now set for the second edition of the 10th Senate President U-18 Football Championship with men and women's teams in Abuja, Nigeria's federal capital. The Coordinator of GRASOF, Hon John Ekpeyong, disclosed to newsmen in an interview that the competition would kick off on 9 November at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja. He noted that the competition is to allow footballers at the grassroots from all over Nigeria to showcase their talents. According to the programme of activities, teams are expected to arrive in Abuja on 7 November and accreditation of players and officials to he held on 8 November. A two-day training focussing on conflict sensitive reporting and Digital  Peace Building has ended in Port Harcourt with a call on journalists to sustenance of peace ahead of the 2027 General Election. The World's football governing body, FIFA has hammered South Africa for using an ineligible player for the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March this year. FIFA, in a statement issued on Monday, confirmed the deduction of three points and goals from South Africa for breaching its rules. The statement reads:  Meanwhile, the South African Football Association, SAFA, has rejected the decision by global football governing body FIFA to deduct three points from them in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifying series. The South Africans are challenging the decision, insisting they were not granted the opportunity to present their argument. SAFA also claimed that the decision was made by a single-member panel of the FIFA disciplinary committee, describing the ruling as “unprecedented.” In a statement on Monday, SAFA said the decision was handed down without any explanation or opportunity for the Association to present its legal arguments.
